Anyone can practice meditation and you can do it anytime, anywhere. There’s no requirement for any particular equipment or a need to attend fancy classes. For many people, the most difficult part is just finding the time. Just make sure you have a space that is comfortable and quiet.
Once you’re in your space, be in a position that you’re comfortable. You can either sit or lie down in any position that feels easy and perfect for you.
Begin by concentrating on your breath, watching your chest or abdomen as it rises and falls. Feel the air as it flows in and out of your mouth or nose. Focus at the moment. Continue to do this for a minute or two, until you become more relaxed.
After that, either with your eyes open or closed, do the following steps:
- Take a deep breath in and hold it for several seconds
- Exhale slowly and repeat
- Make sure that you breathe naturally and relaxed
- Notice your breath as it flows in your nostrils, raises your chest, or moves your abdomen, but don’t change it in any way. Just keep it as is.
- Maintain concentrating on your breath for about 5 to 10 minutes.
- As you find your mind roaming, which is perfectly fine, don’t get distracted. Just recognize that your mind has wandered and slowly return your focus to your breathing.
- As you approach the end, reflect on how quickly your mind has wandered. Then, recognize how easy it was to bring your concentrationback to your breathing.
This may sound a little overwhelming to you right now but your just a practice away to master meditation. Just know that it might not feel very powerful the first few moments you do it. But with consistent practice, it’ll get easier and start to feel more natural.
